Fun and Easy Seasonal Decorations
Use what you already have on hand to add color to the season
As we head into the holiday season, you may want to add a festive touch to your décor—maybe company’s coming, maybe you just want to add a pop of color in the winter months. But what you probably DON’T want is more stress and to-do’s on your list. So why not work with what you already have on hand around the house?
Winter is a wonderful time of the year for using your windows as art! In cold climates the snow framing the window adds a contrast to greens and other seasonal décor. In warmer climates, a decorated window can provide a welcoming atmosphere and help set the holiday mood. Here are a few of our favorite window display ideas:
No snow? (Or want more?) Make some! Paper “faux-flakes” are a fun craft to for all ages. When you’re done, hang them from your window frame with string or fishing wire to create a virtual winter wonderland.
Wreaths aren’t just for doors! Whether traditional evergreen or colorful cranberry, wreaths are an easy way to dress up windows.
Get crafty and nontraditional: take an old picture frame and give it new life. Paint it in festive colors, festoon it with ornaments, and hang as a wreath alternative. For visual depth, choose one with sculptural lines or interesting textures.
Tree boughs can add a nice visual break to a window expanse—they can go up high, above the valance, or rest along a sill. Or, drape them like garland. In addition, they provide an elegant place to hang or place additional decorations. Don’t forget about outside your windows! Show off your personality with window boxes or filled with hardy vintage toys for a whimsical feel, trail greenery around the edges for classic winter appeal, or include ornaments for pops of color.
